Dr. Julie Smith
Education and Experience
Dr. Julie graduated with a Bachelors of Science Degree, with Honors, in Microbiology from the University of Iowa. She then went on to earn her Doctorate of Dental Surgery at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. After graduating from dental school, Dr. Julie practiced general dentistry in central Iowa for two years in private practice and as the staff dentist at ChildServe. It was during her years spent as a general dentist that she discovered her passion for treating children and patients with special health care needs. Dr. Julie returned to the University of Iowa for two additional years of specialized education and training in the treatment of infants, children, and patients with special health care needs in clinical and hospital settings. Upon completion of her training, she was awarded her Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Julie has been practicing pediatric dentistry in central Iowa, including at the Des Moines Health Center, where she provided care for some of Iowa’s most underserved children. She has been a clinical adjunct faculty member of the University of Iowa in the department of Pediatric Dentistry, helping to teach dental students during their clinical training.
As a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist, Dr. Julie is committed to constantly expanding her knowledge and understanding of her specialty. Each year she completes many hours of continuing education specific to pediatric dentistry in order to remain at the forefront of evidence-based dental care.

Beyond the Practice
Originally from Bettendorf, Dr. Julie has resided in Ankeny since graduating from dental school in 2012. She and her husband, Nick, have two daughters, Abigail and Madeline, along with Riley, their family dog. When not seeing patients, Dr. Julie is most often found with her family – though she makes sure to find time to cheer on the Hawkeyes, too!
